This month, Building One Community - The Center for Immigrant Opportunity, began its 5th annual Summer Reading Program for children and parents in the Stamford Public Schools system. The program, a joint collaboration with Stamford Public Schools, reduces the achievement gap and “summer slide” experienced by Hispanic children in the Stamford Public Schools.

This program includes equal participation from children as well as their parents – a stark contrast with many other summer programs. It is often a challenge for immigrant children to practice English over the summer, when a non-English language is typically spoken at home. This program gives both English Language Learner students and parents the opportunity to strengthen their language and comprehension skills. These skills are vital to children’s future success and prepare parents to develop a basis of communication with the schools.
